Are Alcohol Rehabs and Drug Rehabs The Same?

We are asked many times whether drug and alcohol rehabs are the same. The thing that families should know is that addiction, whether to drugs or to alcohol, is similar in nature and will require similar treatment methods. While some rehabs have deeper specializations in alcohol or in drug addiction treatment therapies, most rehabs do treat both addictions. They may also treat other addictions such as gambling, sex, or even shopping. Addiction is addiction – and it is harmful regardless of what the “drug of choice” is.

Alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs are not all the same and they are not of the same quality, however. You will find that some rehabs are better than others in not just the facility itself, but in the experience of its staff members and the treatment methods used. The important thing is that you find an addiction treatment program that works for YOU – because that will help you to ensure the most successful recovery once treatment is completed.

Alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs can have further specializations such as for teens or even just in that they are gender specific. This is because adolescents need to be treated differently for addiction than adults do. Their reasons for taking drugs are often very different than why an adult would take drugs or abuse alcohol. And when it comes to gender specific alcohol rehabs or drug rehabs, it is often a good idea to be completely separated from the opposite sex during a time when your main focus should be on getting better. Any distraction can be detrimental. Additionally, men and women are very different – so specialized treatment methods for men or women may be what is best. Again, it largely depends on the person.

Alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs vary regardless of where you go. While the facility may treat all types of addiction, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be getting exactly the same treatment. Alcohol addiction may require a more intense and difficult detox period, while a person who has a not-so-severe drug addiction may be able to complete detox on an outpatient basis.

There are many questions you probably need answers to right now. If you see a place that says it is a “drug rehab” but you are looking for treatment for alcohol addiction, give them a call anyway. It is likely that they do treat alcohol addiction and if they don’t, they can probably point you to a place that does.
