Alternative Recovery Support
Alternative Recovery Support encompasses a wide array of services that are often times necessary to a person early in recovery. Unlike substance abuse treatment, detox or sponsorship – many of the pieces of recovery are not yet ventured until one re-enters normal living situations.
This is where a support specialist (sometimes referred to as a coach) is a key element. These specialist serve many functions from the beginning until goals are met. A newcomer to recovery will experience many life situations in his or her first year. Many of which he/she used to face while having the ability to drink or drug to get through in previous settings. However, while in recovery from these substances certain life skills are not as easy to perform. And many fears are more evident.
A support specialist will meet the prospect upon completion of treatment, rehab or possibly while one is living in a sober living facility. This specialist will perform what is considered an initial assessment to determine the clients needs and goals. Much like in treatment, a treatment plan is designed for the individual. Goals are set for where the individual would like to be and what outcomes he/she is hoping for.
Alternative recovery support is designed to be a parallel to 12 step support and sponsorship. The recovery support specialist does not serve as a sponsor, rather he/she will guide and motivate the newcomer to engage with the right people in a 12 step program. Alongside the 12 step process, the client will be able to develop and sustain life skills that were foreign prior to being sober.
Many people don’t have the necessary communication skills to even gain employment. Some don’t know how to properly fill out a job application nor interview well. Others aren’t able to balance a check book or manage finances well. And still others aren’t equipped with the ability to properly manage time in their day to day lives.
A recovery support specialist can serve as the missing link between treatment and normal living again. Anyone can utilize these services, from the underdeveloped to the high-end executives. This coaching and motivation is often times the be the ultimate prevention to relapse.
